What grab bars cost and who helps pay
How much does it cost to install grab bars in a bathroom?
National cost guides from EZ Able and Lifeway Mobility, gathered in our market research, price a pair of grab bars, installed, between $100 and $500. Where your bathroom lands in that range comes down to how many spots need a bar and what sits behind the wall at each one. We give the price for your bathroom in writing after the Livability Assessment.
What does grab bar installation cost per bar?
The published figures we rely on price bars by the pair rather than one at a time, so we have no honest per-bar number to give you. One bar beside the toilet costs less than a pair at the tub, and blocking added behind a wall shows up as its own line. Your written scope lists every bar with its wall and its price.
Are grab bars covered by insurance or any government program?
Usually not by health insurance. Original Medicare won't pay for grab bars even with a doctor's note, according to our market research. A Medicare Advantage plan may include bath safety items, a long-term care policy may refund the family later, and public programs such as DC Safe at Home and Maryland Accessible Homes for Seniors list grab bars among the changes they cover. Check each one's current terms before you count on it.
Are there grants that help seniors pay for grab bars?
Yes, depending on where your parent lives and what they earn. DC Safe at Home puts grab bars in for District residents 60 and older under its income limit. Montgomery County's HARP makes accessibility changes free for households that qualify, Prince George's County runs HOPP and HRAP with Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland, and veterans can ask the VA about the HISA grant. Each one has its own page on this site with how to reach it.
Is it cheaper to install grab bars during a bathroom remodel?
Usually, because the wall is already open. On a grab bar job by itself, opening a finished tiled wall to add blocking is an extra line on the price. During a remodel the blocking goes in before the tile, so a bar can be added anywhere later without touching a finished wall, and we put it in the scope even where no bar goes yet.
How grab bars go in
How are grab bars installed so they hold real weight?
Each bar is screwed through the wall into wood, either a stud or a piece of blocking fixed between two studs. Drywall, plaster and tile can't carry a falling adult on their own, so a bar held only by the wall surface is the one that pulls out. We find what is behind each spot before we drill, and a spot with no stud gets blocking first.
Where should grab bars be placed in a shower and around a toilet?
Wherever the person's hand goes when they sit down, stand up or step over the tub wall. In most bathrooms that means a bar on the wall beside the toilet, one at the tub or shower entry to hold while stepping in, and one on the back wall for standing under the water. We watch your parent use the room before marking a spot, because the right height for one person is wrong for another.
How long does grab bar installation take?
One or two bars make a short visit. A full set around the toilet, tub and shower takes longer, and a tiled wall that needs blocking adds the most time. The written scope gives the time for your bathroom before you agree to anything.
Can grab bars be installed on tile, fiberglass, and drywall?
Yes on all three, as long as the screws reach wood behind the surface. Tile gets drilled slowly with a tile bit. Fiberglass and acrylic tub surrounds are thin shells, so the bar mounts through the shell into framing or blocking behind it. Plain drywall is the easiest of the three to drill and holds nothing on its own.
Do grab bars have to be screwed into studs?
Into a stud or into blocking, which is a length of wood fixed between two studs. The spot a hand reaches for often falls between studs, and blocking lets the bar go exactly there without giving up strength. Hollow-wall anchors sold for grab bars do exist, but every bar we install goes into wood.
Does installing grab bars damage the tile?
It leaves screw holes under each bar's mounting plate, and those stay if the bar ever comes off. Drilled slowly with the right bit, glazed tile takes the screws without cracking in most bathrooms. Where blocking has to go behind tile, a section comes off and gets replaced, and the scope says so before work starts.
Picking the bar
Stainless steel grab bars vs plastic ones, which is better?
Stainless steel, for a bar that has to catch a person. It keeps its strength, resists rust in a wet room and comes in finishes that match the faucet. A plastic or coated bar can work if its maker rates it to carry body weight and it goes into wood the same way, so read the rating before you buy.
Permanent grab bars vs removable ones, which should I get?
Permanent, fixed into framing or blocking, for any spot where someone puts their weight. Removable handles clamp on or stick on, and none of them can promise to hold through a slip. In a rental, a permanent bar goes in with the landlord's written permission, and the holes get patched if it ever comes out.
When a bar is loose, rusty or in the wrong place
What if a grab bar feels loose or was installed wrong?
Stop using it today and tell everyone in the house, because a bar that moves can let go in a slip. A loose bar was usually fastened into drywall or tile with nothing behind it. We take it down, find framing or add blocking, and put it back where the hand actually reaches.
Can a loose grab bar be repaired or does it need to be replaced?
Most of the time the bar is fine and the mounting is what failed. It comes off, the old holes get filled, and it goes back up into wood, sometimes a few inches over. A bar that is bent, cracked at the flange or rusted through gets replaced.
Why do cheap grab bars rust or pull out of the wall?
Pulling out is about the mounting more than the bar. A bar screwed only into drywall or tile is anchored to a surface that crumbles under a sudden load. Rust comes from plated steel whose coating wears through in a wet room, which is one reason stainless steel is the safer buy.
Who should install them
Who should install grab bars, a handyman or a specialist?
Anyone who will find the framing, add blocking where there is none and set each bar where the person's hand goes. Ask how they plan to anchor it before you hire them, and if the answer is drywall anchors or suction, keep looking. We do grab bars as the first step of a whole-house plan, after the Livability Assessment ranks the rest of the house.
How much weight should a grab bar be rated to hold?
At least 250 pounds of force, the figure the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design from the US Department of Justice set for a grab bar and its mounting in public buildings. A private home isn't bound by the ADA, but that number is a sensible floor for a home bar too. The bar's own rating means nothing if the wall behind it can't take the load, so the mounting matters as much as the bar.
Should a grab bar installer be licensed and insured?
Yes. A license gives you an agency to complain to if the work goes wrong, and proof of insurance protects you if someone gets hurt in the house, so ask for both before anyone drills. We hold a Washington, DC home improvement license, a DC contractor license and a Maryland contractor license, under Home Improvement Contractor License No. 420226000078.

After a fall or before a discharge
My parent had a fall, how fast can grab bars be installed?
Call with what happened and the day your parent will be home, and grab bars are among the first fixes we schedule. We don't offer emergency or same-day service, and we are open 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM every day. Until the bars are in, keep your parent off the towel bar and the sink edge, and have someone close by at bath time.
Can grab bars be installed this week before a hospital discharge?
Tell us the discharge date on the first call and we'll say plainly whether this week can work. Bars, a shower seat and a clear path to the toilet make up the first round for a discharge, and that round is scheduled backward from the date. We won't promise a day before we know the bathroom.
Emergency grab bar installation near me?
We don't offer emergency grab bar installation. If someone is hurt, call 911. If everyone is safe and you need bars soon, call us between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM, any day, and the bars get booked with the first round of fixes. Until then, a shower chair and a helper standing by make bathing safer.
