Make It Livable DC

For sons, daughters and spouses

For families worried about a parent at home

Find the situation that sounds like yours. The plan starts from where your family is today.

Mom or Dad lives alone

When nobody else lives there, nobody sees the near fall or the rail that worked loose. We fix the bath, the entry and the night path first. After that the Livable Plan puts our crew back in the house on a schedule, and the report comes to you wherever you live.

Your parents are a couple and one of them is declining

You have two people to protect. One is at risk of falling, and the other is doing the lifting and catching that wrecks a caregiver's back. We focus on the bath, a bedroom and laundry on the main floor, and grab bars at the bed, the toilet, the shower and the favorite chair.

A parent lives with you, in your home

Here the job is independence inside a shared house. A first-floor room becomes their suite, with a safe bathroom of their own, an entry they can use without calling for help, and privacy that works for both of you.

A parent is moving in and the date is set

Often their own house is being sold at the same time, so the date doesn't move. A den or basement becomes the suite, a half bath becomes a full bath, and the entry gets fixed. Give us the move date and we build the plan backward from it.

You are managing from another city

You can't stand over the work, so what you need is eyes and proof. That means the assessment with photos, a phased plan you approve from your phone, and a photo report after every visit.

Someone is coming home from the hospital or rehab

The hospital has picked a day and the house isn't ready for a walker or a wheelchair. Say the date on your first call. The way in, the bathroom and a bed they can reach get done ahead of it, and the rest of the list waits.

Your parent rents, or a landlord controls the house

Then the work has to come back out or carry the landlord's permission. Bars and rails go in once the landlord agrees in writing, ramps are modular, and the lighting and trip fixes leave the structure alone. We write the letter to the landlord for you.

The signs to watch for

Most families spot it on a visit, often over the holidays, when they see the house with fresh eyes. A hand trailing along the wall or the furniture. Showers getting skipped. The towel bar used as a handle to get out of the tub.

Your dad sleeping on the couch because the stairs are too much. Bruises nobody brings up. Burned-out bulbs that stay burned out. Front steps taken one at a time, with a hand on the door frame.

Any one of these is reason enough for an assessment. None of them means your parent has to move.

A holiday visit checklist

  • Walk from the bedroom to the bathroom with the lights off and notice where it goes dark.
  • Look at the tub. Is there a grab bar fixed into the wall, or only a towel bar?
  • Count the rails on the front steps and the inside stairs. Is there one on each side?
  • Check the rugs and runners for edges that slide or curl.
  • Open the kitchen cabinets and see whether the everyday dishes need a step stool.
  • Press the test button on the smoke detectors.
  • Watch how your parent gets up from their usual chair and out of bed.

Write down what you see. It helps us on the walk, and it gives you something concrete to talk through with your parent.

When you live out of town

You don't have to fly in. We set the assessment up with your parent and you join by phone. The written report comes to you with photos, and you can approve the first fixes now and the rest later, all from your phone.

Talking with your parent about it

A lot of parents hear "safety changes" as "you're getting old." Talk about what they want instead, which is usually to stay in their own home. If one of them is caring for the other, talk about making the caregiver's job safer, because it does.

The assessment is a conversation with the person who lives there, and they have the final say on how they live in their house.

Start with the assessment

Siblings in different cities can all read the same report and agree on the next step from there.

The report is yours either way. Your number is never sold.
