Paying for a stair lift
Are there grants or programs that help seniors pay for stair lifts?
In DC, yes. DC Safe at Home lists stair lifts for District residents 60 and older under its income limit, and the DHCD HAIP grant lists them for homeowners who qualify. Veterans can ask the VA about SAH and SHA grants, which name lifts. The Maryland Accessible Homes for Seniors list doesn't name stair lifts, so ask DHCD before you plan on it.
Is it cheaper to rent a stair lift?
For a short recovery, renting can cost less, if a lift dealer near you rents one that fits your stairs. Rental lifts are usually straight, because a curved rail is made for one staircase. We don't rent lifts, so set a rental quote beside the written price for buying, and remember that a bed on the main floor can also cover a short recovery.
What does stair lift maintenance cost per year?
We don't have a published figure we trust enough to quote. The lift's maker or dealer sets the service plan and its price, so get it in writing before you buy, along with what the warranty covers. Our Livable Plan visits check the stair rails and the light on the stairs around the lift.
How a lift fits and works
How long does stair lift installation take?
A straight lift goes in sooner than a curved one, because a curved rail is built for your staircase after it is measured. Our stair prep, fixing loose treads, adding rails and running power to an outlet nearby, gets its own days in the scope. Ask the lift installer how long the model you choose takes from order to install.
What happens to the stair lift during a power outage?
Most home stair lifts run on batteries that the outlet keeps charged, so they keep working for a number of trips after the power goes out. How many depends on the model and the battery's age, so ask the maker. Park the lift at its charging point after every ride, because a lift left off the charger can be flat when the outage comes.
Does installing a stair lift damage the stairs?
The rail bolts to the treads, not the wall, so what it leaves behind is screw holes in the steps. When the lift comes out, those holes get filled. Carpet on the stairs can usually stay, though a runner that slips has to be fixed before the rail goes on.
Can other people still use the stairs once a lift is installed?
Yes. The seat, arms and footrest fold up, and the lift parks at the top or bottom when nobody is riding. On a narrow stair the folded lift still takes some width, so we measure what is left for the rest of the household before anyone orders one.
A lift or something else
Stair lift vs home elevator, which makes sense for a two story house?
A stair lift, for most two-story houses, because it uses the staircase you already have. A home elevator needs a shaft built through both floors, which is a construction project of its own, and we don't build elevators. When the stairs are the problem for good, the option we'd set beside the lift is a bedroom and bath on the main floor.
Buying a new stair lift vs buying a used one?
A used straight lift can work if its rail can be cut to your staircase and someone will stand behind it with service and parts. A used curved lift rarely fits, because its rail was bent for another house's stairs. Whatever you buy, check the battery's age and who will repair it before you pay.
Problems and repairs
What are the most common problems with stair lifts?
Batteries that run down because the lift wasn't parked on its charger, and safety sensors that stop the lift when something sits on the rail or the stairs. Batteries also wear out with age and need replacing. A lift that stops partway and won't restart once the stairs are clear needs the installer.
What if a stair lift stops working, who repairs it?
The company that installed it, under the maker's warranty if it still applies. When a lift went in through our installation partner, you still call us, because we stay your single contact on the job. Before you buy any lift, ask who services it in your area.
Choosing a lift and who puts it in
What weight capacity should a stair lift have?
One rated above the rider's weight, with room to spare for heavy clothes and whatever they carry. Each model's rating is printed on the maker's spec sheet. If the person is close to the limit of a standard model, ask about a heavy-duty one before the order goes in.
Should a stair lift company be licensed and insured?
Yes, and a lift job often has two trades in it, the lift installer and whoever does the electrical and stair work. Ask each one for a license and proof of insurance. Our part of a lift job, the stair repairs, rails and power, is done under Home Improvement Contractor License No. 420226000078, and the lift partner is named in the scope.
What maintenance does a stair lift need to stay safe?
Keep it parked on the charger, keep the rail and the stairs clear, and wipe the rail if the maker says to. Book the maker's recommended service for the battery and the safety sensors. Check that the seatbelt latches and the seat locks in place before each ride, and stop using the lift if it jerks or makes a new noise.
Stair lifts in the Maryland suburbs
Stair lift installers in the Maryland suburbs near DC?
We measure and prepare stairs for lifts across Montgomery and Prince George's counties, inside 30 miles of the US Capitol, and a lift from a qualified partner is named in the scope. Split-levels and split-foyers are common in these suburbs, so expect the measurements to cover each short flight. Before you budget, check with Maryland's housing department on whether its senior accessibility program covers any part of the job.
When someone needs it soon
How fast can a stair lift be installed after a fall or surgery?
A straight lift on straight stairs is the quicker kind, and a curved lift takes longer because its rail is built for your stairs. We don't do emergency or same-day work. Call with the day your parent comes home, and if the lift can't be ready by then, a bed on the main floor bridges the gap.
Stair lift needed before a parent comes home from the hospital, how soon can it happen?
Give us the discharge date on the first call, along with photos of the stairs. We tell you whether a straight lift fits and whether it can be in by that day. If it can't, the first round sets up a bed on the main floor and a plan for the bathroom, and the lift follows.
Is a temporary stair lift rental available on short notice?
Not from us, because we don't rent lifts. Some lift dealers rent straight lifts, and what they have on hand is up to them. For a short recovery the faster fix is often moving the bed to the main floor and putting rails on both sides of the stairs.
