What moves the price of a safer bathroom
How much of the room changes
Bars and a handheld shower leave the tub where it is. Pulling the tub out means new plumbing, a new floor and new tile, and that's where the number climbs.
What is behind the wall
Every bar has to land on solid framing. Plaster walls in older DC houses sometimes need blocking added first so a bar can hold a full body weight.
The pipes you already have
Moving a drain, or replacing an old valve that cannot take an anti-scald part, adds plumbing hours.
How the person gets around
A shower planned for a wheelchair needs more floor and a wider door than one planned for someone who walks in with a cane. That's why a fully handicap accessible bathroom, with a roll-in shower, a wider door and a sink a chair fits under, sits at the high end of these ranges.
Permits
A full shower conversion can need a permit from the DC Department of Buildings, and your written scope says so up front.
How we price a safer bathroom
We don't price a DC bathroom until the Livability Assessment has ranked every danger in the house.
Bars and a handheld shower can be priced and put in first. Anything bigger gets its own written scope and fixed price, and no price moves once work starts.
What the price of a safer bathroom includes
- A written scope that names every bar, fixture and surface
- A fixed price you see before any work begins
- Bars set into structure so they hold in a slip
- Plumbing, tile and installation by our own crews
What can cost extra
- Moving a toilet or drain to a new spot
- Adding framing inside walls that cannot hold a bar yet
- Widening the bathroom door
- Permit fees when the job needs a permit
Where these ranges come from
Every range on this page is a published national cost-guide figure, gathered in our market research from EZ Able, Lifeway Mobility, HomeGuide, Angi and ConsumerAffairs. None of it is an average of jobs we have done. Your bathroom decides where inside each range you land, and the written price you get after the assessment is the real number.
Questions families ask
Does Medicare pay for grab bars or a walk-in shower?
No. Original Medicare does not cover home modifications, walk-in tubs included, and our market research found it excludes grab bars even when they are medically necessary. Some Medicare Advantage plans carry a home-safety benefit and some long-term care policies pay the family back, so check your plan.
How much does a walk in tub cost installed?
It depends on the tub model, how far the drain and water lines have to move, and whether the walls need new tile. A deep tub can also need a larger water heater. You get the full installed number in writing after the assessment.
How much does a walk in tub cost with jets?
Jets add a pump, and a pump usually needs its own electrical circuit near the tub, so the price covers electrical work on top of the tub and plumbing. Jets also add parts to keep clean. The written scope lists that work line by line before you decide.
Is there help for older DC residents?
DC Safe at Home, run by the DC Department of Aging and Community Living, helps older District residents who meet its income limits. Check the current terms with the program before you build a plan around it.
Can we start with bars now and do the shower later?
Yes. The small fixes protect the person this week, and a bigger change can follow on its own written price once you know it is still needed.
How firm is the written price?
It holds. Nothing gets added to the bill unless you sign off on a change in writing first.
