Home safety problems we fix

When reaching, bending and carrying in the kitchen gets risky

The everyday dishes live on the top shelf and the step stool lives next to the counter. The oven is low, the knobs are stiff, and the soup pot is heavier than it used to be.

What makes a kitchen risky

The kitchen is often where a change in someone shows first, because cooking is the thing they least want to give up. The risk comes from reaching up, bending down and carrying things across the room. Climbing a step stool for the top cabinet is a classic way to end up on the floor. Low ovens and deep base cabinets mean bending while holding weight. Twist knobs and round faucet handles fight arthritic hands, and poor light over the counter hides the knife and the burner.

What we look at

We watch the kitchen in use. We note where the everyday things are kept, which ones take a stool or a deep bend, where the cook stands and whether any light falls on that spot. We're aiming for a kitchen where everything used daily sits between shoulder and hip, within easy reach.

How it gets fixed

Pull-down shelving brings the upper cabinets within reach, and pull-out shelves in the base cabinets end the deep bend. Lever or touch faucets replace round handles. Under-cabinet lights put light on the counter. The daily things get moved into reachable storage, with small build-outs where the layout comes up short, and a non-slip, anti-fatigue mat goes where the cook stands. None of this needs a full remodel unless the report finds it does.

Signs the kitchen has become a problem

Meals getting simpler because cooking got harder. A step stool parked by the counter. Groceries left out because putting them away means reaching or bending. Burns or spills that weren't happening a year ago. Any one of these is worth a look.

If a parent lives with you

When a parent moves into your home, the kitchen gets shared, and it has to work for two very different cooks. A few reachable shelves, a lever faucet and good light over the counter let your parent cook safely without changing how the rest of the family uses the room. We look at the kitchen with both of you in mind.

Questions families ask

Do we need a new kitchen?

Rarely. Most kitchen problems get solved with shelving, hardware, light and moving what's already there to where it can be reached.

The fix

Shelves that come down to the cook, drawers that pull out, a faucet worked with one hand and light on the counter. The work lives under accessible kitchen remodeling, with help from lighting and home safety.

Start with the assessment

If cooking has started to feel risky, we check the reach, the light and the floor.

The report is yours either way. Your number is never sold.
