Make It Livable DC

Programs that help pay

Grants, loans and free programs for aging in place work

These public programs pay for some of the changes we make, from a pair of grab bars to a whole house adapted for a wheelchair. Each sets its own rules, and each page below gives the amounts, who qualifies and how to apply.

Apply early, then keep fixing the house

Outside money pays for a small share of this work. In research from Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies, about 6 percent of improvement projects by older homeowners drew on any outside funding source.

So apply to every program that fits, and plan as though the answer could be no. A program pays for its own list of work, on its own schedule, and sometimes only through its own partners. Anything off that list can be fixed whenever you decide.

We are not enrolled as a contractor in any of these programs, and we do not fill out applications. Where a program lets the homeowner pick the contractor or asks for a bid, the Livability Assessment ends in a written, itemized scope with a fixed price you can send in.

Start with the assessment

Whichever program you apply to, the dangers it will not cover still need fixing. The walk finds them and puts a fixed price on each.

The report is yours either way. Your number is never sold.
