What moves the price of a stair lift
Straight or curved
This is the biggest swing on the page. A rail that turns has to be made for your one staircase. A straight rail doesn't.
Stair width and landings
The narrowest point of the stairs and the open space at the top and bottom decide which lifts fit at all.
Power at the stairs
A lift needs an outlet close by. If there is none, running power to the right spot adds electrical work.
The stairs themselves
A loose tread, a wobbly rail or a broken step gets fixed before any lift goes on.
How we price a stair lift
We measure the stairs during the Livability Assessment, and the written report lays out both choices, a lift or a bedroom on the main floor. We do the prep work for lifts and we also build those bedrooms, so we have no reason to push you toward either one.
Our crews do the stair repairs, the power and the rails, and that work gets a fixed price in writing. When a specialist partner installs the lift itself, the scope names the partner before you agree to anything.
The price you approve in writing is the price of the job.
What the price of a stair lift includes
- Measuring the stairs, the landings and the nearest outlet
- Readying the stairs and power for the lift
- A written scope and fixed price for the whole job
- One company responsible for the plan from start to finish
What can cost extra
- A new outlet or circuit near the stairs
- Repairs to treads or rails before the lift goes on
- Hall rails, and brighter light where the stairs begin and end
Where these ranges come from
The stair lift ranges come from Lifeway Mobility's published pricing, its 2026 installed guide for straight lifts and its 2025 figures for curved ones, as gathered in our market research. They are national published numbers and they say nothing about our own jobs. Some lifts are installed by a specialist partner, which we tell you up front, and the written price after the assessment is the real number.
Questions families ask
Which kind of lift do my stairs need?
Stairs that run straight with no turn and no landing take a straight lift. Anything else needs a curved one, and the assessment measures it so you know before you shop.
Is a lift cheaper than moving the bedroom downstairs?
A straight lift usually costs less up front and goes in faster. A first-floor conversion is priced in writing after the assessment, so you can put the two written numbers side by side.
Does DC help pay for stair lifts?
DC Safe at Home has helped older District residents with stair lifts when they meet its income limits. Ask the program about its current terms before you plan on it.
